The secret shortcut
In the break of dawn before school, Wendell and Floyd mapped out a new shortcut to
get to school on time. Wendell was at Floyd’s doorstep and Floyd was still in his pajamas. Floyd quickly dressed in his school clothes, did his hair, and walked out the door. Wendell and Floyd ran into many different problems on their new shortcut and took treacherous paths.
They ran into their first problem. A thick jungle lied before them with
greenery and mystery. They walked through the thick and sticky jungle and heard
a rumbling sound in the distance. Wendell whimpered, “What was
that.”
“I don’t know,” said Floyd shakily. They tiptoed out of the jungle leaving behind
them a mystery of danger. Then, Wendell and Floyd knew exactly what lay in front
of them.
“Volcano,” yelled Wendell and Floyd. The two friends booked it trying to avoid getting
burned by rushing lava. Rocks were flying everywhere and one just barely missed Floyd skinning his back.
Wendell yelled, “This shortcut sucks!”
“Ya think,” screamed Floyd. After a long period of exhausting running, Wendell and Floyd finally made a safe distance between them and the volcano. Wendell and Floyd thought that was it, but it was just the beginning.
A dozen strong guard dogs patrolled the area and growled at every sound they heard. Wendell and Floyd quietly walked away from the guard dogs when they saw two bows and 24 arrows lying on a tree stump. Before they could realize that it was a trap they took the bows and arrows and started to run. The guard dogs ran after the boys. Wendell yelled“What are we doing, we have bows and arrows”. The boys did a 360 and started shooting the guard dogs one by one. Each dog fell hopelessly to the ground whimpering their last words. Wendell and Floyd cheered and moved on a dirty, windy road.
Wendell and Floyd heard the school bell ring in the mere distance. They ran as hard as they could thinking that they could be early to school for the first time this year. A bullet whizzed right between them and hit the maple sapling. They turned to see five
bandits loaded with weapons and wondered what to do. As the bandits surrounded
them they remembered that they still had their bows and arrows and started shooting in all different directions. They were mesmerized when they saw all five bandits lying on the ground with arrows in their bodies. Floyd ran as fast as he could and Wendell followed shortly after. Both ran up the school’s hillside just as the late bell rang. They rushed in the classroom and exclaimed “We are here!” Wendell and Floyd were happy to get to school early and promised to never ever go on that shortcut again!!!
